Homeownership Key: Vulnerability
I’ve had three conversations over the last three weeks with people who are considering buying their first home. They are all overwhelmed by the process and don’t know where to start. I felt this way when Dan and I bought our first house, before I started making my living helping people buy and sell homes. These conversations have gotten me thinking about why that is the case, so I’ve been reflecting on my own experience.
It seems that the process of buying a home can be so overwhelming because there are so many unknowns: Where do you start? What is the process? How do you know what you can afford? What’s happening in the market?
Buying a home is a very personal decision. Before you move forward you need to be able to answer these questions:
How does this fit into YOUR life goal?
What are your plans for the home?
Why now?
If you aren’t able to answer all of those questions you need to do some work. Depending on your situation, the answers to these questions can be hard to share. Whether or not you know the answers, it can be hard to find a real estate agent who feels ‘right’. You should feel connected to them, like you can trust their judgement, and that you can be vulnerable with them. Being vulnerable will help them get you the answers to your questions and help you find the right home based on your situation and goals.
