What Does Covid-19 Mean For Those Buying and Selling Homes?
Since Covid-19 has become a pandemic and is spreading throughout our area it’s a good time to take a moment to think about what it means for you if you’re currently buying or selling a home. You’re probably already following the advice of the CDC and other global health organizations so here are a few real estate specific things you should know:
You don’t have to stop your home search. There will still be homes for sale and if you’re working with a real estate agent you can get information about the homes without having to leave your current home. You can also tour properties privately with your agent so you don’t have to interact with crowds at open houses.
Don’t shake hands. I’m so used to shaking hands when I meet people, so this one is hard for me, but stay diligent. Limiting contact will help keep you from spreading germs or getting sick.
Carry hand sanitizer and a handkerchief. If you are visiting homes and you have a handkerchief you’ll be able to open doors without using your hand. If you don’t have a handkerchief, or want to be extra careful, use hand sanitizer after you’ve left a property to clean your hands immediately. (Hopefully, you have some hand sanitizer already, because I know it’s really difficult to find it in stores now.) If a home you’re visiting has booties for your shoes, wipes, or hand sanitizer, please use them. If the home is occupied the owners are trying to keep their home as clean as possible.
Meetings can be done virtually. Social distancing is important. If you need to meet with your agent, consider a video conference. If you’re working a on pre-approval, your lender can setup a phone call and collect the necessary documents virtually. If you’re ready to settle on your home ask the settlement company what pre-cautions they are taking. If you prefer not to go to their office, many can send a notary to you, so you can sign in the privacy of your home.
Practice Social Distancing. Since social distancing has been recommended and consider whether open houses are the right option for you. Many agents are preparing their listings with hand sanitizer, gloves, cleaning wipes, and booties to keep home as clean as possible. If this is outside of your comfort zone, contact a real estate agent (Hi, I’m right here!) and we’ll be happy to give you a private tour.
Most people are taking advantage of this time to go view homes with their remote working schedules, low interest rates, and some less serious buyers sitting on the sidelines. Stay safe and wash your hands!
