2020 has been tough! Here are a few thoughts on supporting local community as we round out the year:
If you’ve been following and supporting the Black Lives Matter protests, then you’ve probably shared on social media, signed petitions, read a book about race, and donated to organizations leading this work at least. You might be wondering what you can do next.
Here’s my challenge to you: Look into your wallet.
I’ve been meaning to write a post on my values for months. I could just never get the words to flow. I started writing this post on Monday, stayed silent for #BlackOutTuesday, our team had a conversation about our values and how to examine ourselves on Tuesday, then again on Wednesday, and again on Thursday. Now it’s Friday and I’ve finally put the finishing touches on this post. I’m sure there are flaws, but I don’t want to be silent.
This year for my birthday instead of celebrating in the traditional way, I decided to do a fundraiser supporting Dreaming Out Loud, Inc. (DOL), an organization supporting some of DC's most vulnerable communities. DOL has helped coordinate and distribute nearly 40,000 emergency meals and thousands of pounds of fresh produce for vulnerable communities in response to COVID-19.
Have you ever wondered when your DC home was built? Who built it? Who the first owner was? The DC Government has an app for that!
This is a really difficult time for everyone and the uncertainty makes it even more difficult. One thing I’m looking forward to is being able to get out and go to local bars, restaurants, and shops again. Here’s a list of resources to help you find businesses that are open during this time of social distancing that you can support to make sure things feel as normal as possible when this is all over.
