Fall Home Maintenance Checklist

Winter is coming, so it’s a good idea to set aside some time to make sure you’re home is ready for the colder months. Here’s a list of things you’ll need to do around your house depending on where you live and the type of home you have.

Gutters and Downspouts

  •  Clean gutters and downspouts to remove and prevent build up of leaves and other debris.

  • Have your gutters inspected to be sure water is not coming down behind gutters and that all support brackets are securely in place.

  • Clear debris from exterior drains, especially those near exterior doors.

Interior

  • If your windows and /or doors have winter storm windows remove the screens to cool weather storm windows and doors.

  • Install weather stripping or caulking around windows and doors to prevent drafts and to lower heating bills.

  • If you have ceiling fans change the direction to create an upward draft.

  • Test and change the batteries in your smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors.

  • If you have window A/C units remove and store them.

Heating Systems

  • Replace the filter in your furnace.

  • Consider having a heating professional check your heating system to ensure optimal performance so you don’t get caught in the cold.

  • Clean your ducts to better your heating system’s efficiency as well as to reduce household dust and to provide relief to those with respiratory problems.

Plumbing

  • Ensure any pipes close to the exterior of your home are well insulated to prevent pipes freezing and bursting, ensure that the pipes are well insulated.

  • Know how to locate and turn off the water shut-off valve in case pipes do freeze.

  • Turn off all exterior spigots to prevent freezing over the winter.

Chimney and Fireplace

  • Have your chimney professionally inspected and cleaned. Fireplaces should have an annual cleaning to prevent dangerous chimney fires.

Attic ventilation

  • Check bird and rodent screens for attic vents to prevent any unwanted guests.

Landscape and Yardwork

  • Now is the best time to fertilize and reseed your lawn.

  • Have an arborist prune your trees and shrubs after the leaves turn to remove any dangerous limbs and encourage healthy growth in the spring.

  • Store your grill, outdoor furniture and planters and pots from the elements.

  • If you have a pool, make sure there is no damage to the cover.
